Are You A Young Driver? 3 Steps To Take To Lower Your Car Insurance Premium

Posted on: 24 June 2017

Young drivers often face extremely high insurance premiums because of the increased chance that they will get into an accident due to their level of driving experience. Here are three steps that you can take as a young or new driver to lower your insurance premium and keep it at a reasonable level.

#1 Take A Certified Defensive Driving Course

One of the first things that you can do is take a certified defensive driving course. These courses are sometimes offered online, but are most often offered as in-person courses. They may be offered by a local driving school or a local department of motor vehicles office. Make sure that the class that you take is certified and recognized by your insurance company. Taking a defensive driving class can help to lower your overall insurance premium for at least a couple of years and is a good way to show your insurance company that you take the responsibility of driving seriously.

#2 Purchase A Reliable Vehicle

Although it can be tempting to purchase a sports car or an old-classic for your first vehicle, both of these types of vehicles are only going to drive up your insurance premium even more. Instead, stick to a standard vehicle that has all of the safety features. It doesn't have to be brand-new, but try to keep it relative to the past decade or so. Driving a sturdy and dependable vehicle that has lots of safety features, such as anti-lock brakes, security system and advanced back-up technology are great ways to lower your insurance premium. Be smart about the car that you drive, especially as a new and young driver who is already facing higher insurance premiums.

#3 Keep Your Driving Record Clean

Next, make sure that you keep your driving record clean. That means following all of the restrictions on your license if you live somewhere with a graduated license. It means paying attention to the speed limits and not pushing the gas too much when you are out on the road. Keeping a clean driving record and criminal record, especially over time, will help lower your insurance costs. The longer you go without a ticket, the better chance you have of scoring a discount on your insurance.

That also means that you should do everything that you can to avoid an accident. Remember to turn your phone off or put it somewhere where you can't get to it when driving. Even using hands-free devices with a phone can take your focus off the road. Remember that you are operating a piece of heavy machinery, and it deserves your full focus especially since you are just building up your road knowledge and reflects.

These are just three steps you can take to lower your car insurance premium and ensure that you don't pay more than you have to for vehicle insurance.
